What Matters free essay sample

Money, sex, cars, and clothes; these are things that are glorified in the world today and as what matter in life. You won’t hear a fifth grade teacher telling her students that these are the things that matter in life, but television, music, and movies do a great job at it. The American Dream is about becoming wealthy so you can have whatever you want. What is the definition of wealthy though? The only true wealthy persons in the world are the ones with morals. Without them, we are heartless fiends after material possessions. The United States of America prides itself on our compassion and willingness to help countries in duress. Aiding third world countries millions of miles away is a prime example of morality. Our conscious would not let us live with our fortunes while there are nations with their population suffering from malnutrition. We become so guilt ridden whenever seeing a picture of a person in that situation that we have to do something about it. We will write a custom essay sample on What Matters or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Without our morals, many of people would be dead due to its absence and the absence of our aid. If you think that the gap between the wealthy in the U.S. is big, just imagine what it would be like if there were no such things as welfare and medicare. Slavery would still be happening since there would be nobody how would stand up and say that it is wrong. I wouldn’t even be writing this paper if it weren’t for morals, which is why it is what really matters. What Matters free essay sample There was a time I hated him, when we were both very young. He was awkward to look at, all spindly legs and gangly arms. I had never before met someone so haughty, so incredibly rude, and just generally obnoxious. He produced a lot of saliva whenever he spoke, which in turn made him sound like the victim of a perpetual cold. The most exasperating thing about him, by far, was his inability to sit still. He would meander about the classroom, slinking from desk to desk, always making a scene out of avoiding contact with the floor. To know him then was a terrible misfortune. However, that period was brief, and is often forgotten about. Past affairs are exactly that: past affairs. Now is what matters, and to know him now is the greatest joy. He is still quite awkward to look atnow even more soas his limbs are twice as lanky and his gait three times as fluid. We will write a custom essay sample on What Matters or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page His face is uncannily boyish and doesn’t quite coincide with his antique attire. But I have never known someone with such a beautiful soul as his. He is the type of person that is not quite sure if he can be loved, yet still manages to give out more than anyone could reasonably afford. Happiness comes and goes for him in tidal waves. There are days when he erupts with blissfulness; there are days when he is catatonic. Most days he appears to be caught in between the two, lost somewhere within himself. These are the days when he always responds with an â€Å"I’m fine† and a meager grin, although his eyes betray his words, incapable of concealing the truth. The truth is that he is constantly on the brink of destruction. Never before have I encountered a person so tortured. His mind harbors demons he refuses to let anyone see, though the effect that they have on him is exceedingly clear. They haunt him, cloud his heart with doubt, fool him into believing he is worthless. The negativity follows him everywhere, pervading the surrounding air like thick black smoke, choking all who dare tread near him. I believe that there is a part of him that is tired of running, a part that wants to succumb, just to know what it is like not to live in fear. I also believe that there is a part of him that wants, more than anything, to be savedthough he rarely feels that he is worth saving. It is hard, at times, to determine which side will prevail. I will never tell him, but he has a way about him that is utterly captivating. He often studies me, head cocked slightly to one side, one eye squinted, and right when I feel as if I might melt under his scrutiny, he grins and murmurs something like â€Å"We should see each other tomorrow. We’ll drink coffee and smoke cigars and listen to old albums.† Then, when we meet the next day, we do anything but that. I live for waking up on gray mornings entwined in his arms, his breathing in time with my heartbeat; lazy afternoons in his living room, lying on the floor as he clumsily strums his guitar and half-sings something he wrote; nights that drag on and on as we drain bottles of wine and dance to his father’s old records. His presence awakens every cell in my body. He inspires me to be better, not just for him, but for the world. I strive to make him as proud of me as I am of him. He does not say goodbye. A glaring fault of his, I am driven mad by the lack of courtesy. Conversations on the phone are left open ended. Departures in person consist of a nod and a swift turn of the heel, at most. Whether this is his choice, or simply something he isnt capable of doing, I will never know. â€Å"It’s pointless,† he says to me whenever I try to argue. â€Å"Why make things harder for yourself? Think of how much happier everyone would be if they only ever said hello.† It frustrates me to no end when he says this. I am left sputtering, even as he rolls his eyes and leaves the room. â€Å"But you don’t understand,† I call after him. â€Å"Goodbyes are everything.† My words have yet to resonate with him, though. Even when he left to study abroad for a year, he refused to speak to anyone for two weeks prior to his voyage. I bring this up to him often; I tryin vainto articulate just how much it hurts when he does things like that. He replies with a you-know-how-I-am kind of look and an apologetic shrug. When he decided to leave again, this time for much longer than a year, he did so quietly and abruptly, as was his way. I remember waking up alone that gray morning, leaping out of bed, running through the house, screaming his name. Finding his body crumpled in the bathroom, finding his spirit no where. Wanting to peel off everythingfrom his shirt to the very nailpolish I was wearingand evaporate into the dawn. Never before had I felt so hollow. I remember tearing through his belongings, through my belongings, desperately seeking a note, a picture, a sign. Collapsing beside him, demanding a reason. His silence was deafening. I should have been used to it by then; he had always been that way. It was a glaring fault of mine to expect anything else. However, our past faults are just that: past faults. I had the great fortune of knowing him, of loving himand that is what matters. To love him was the greatest joy.

The Purchase of Paris Saint German Football Club by Qatar Sports Case Study

The Purchase of Paris Saint German Football Club by Qatar Sports Investments - Case Study Example It was an effective strategy because purchasing the football club by QSI was one way of showing national pride. The strategy motive was also the belief in the future growth of sports and enable PSG to achieve their big dreams. It was also an effective strategy for transforming the PSG into one of the biggest teams in the globe. Thus, placing people in power who have knowledgeable and effective skills about the sport would be significant for the success of the PSG club. The project also focused on the other argumentative side by revealing that to a smaller extent, the purchase of Paris Saint-German FC by QSI was not a good strategy. This was because selling the PSG FC to Qatar is one of putting the football club under risks. It was not a good strategy because it might be due to political interest and the aim for Qatar to achieve its business objectives. Lastly, the conclusion was included that provided a brief summary of the argumentative points presented in the project. In What Way i s the Purchase of Paris Saint-German Football Club by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) a Good Strategy for the Company? Paris Saint-German FC is a qualified association football team, which is based in Paris, France. It was founded in 1970 by Saint-Germain and Paris football associations who joined and formed the association, which has been always representing Paris. PSG (Paris Saint-German) is an interesting football association across the globe. This team was bought by QSI during summer 2011, thus the French club has shocked many people because of its immense transfer expenditure. The Paris team has always been on the forefront and it has been in the competition record since it began its football association in 1974. PSG is among the teams that have won main European cup, and it became the major team in 1994 after it won the tournament cup. It was also ranked among the best leading teams in the UEFA tournament winners in 1998 and is currently ranked 16th in the IIHS (International F ederation of Football History & Statistics) and 46th in the UEFA team ranking. The purchase of PSG football club by Qatar is a good strategy for the company because of varied reasons. First, Qatar sports could be investing in football as one way of promoting Qatar business interest at large. For instance, Qatar will offer football companies a patronage pact to enhance their brand. Moreover, there is not team across the globe with higher interest than PSG. Since this football club was purchased by QSI, the club has greatly improved; thus shocked the world with its massive transfer cost. Many people are expecting a lot from QSI over the coming decades because they invest a lot; hence good for benefiting of the club. This is because it will enable the company to achieve their dreams of building a competitive team which will become among the best teams across Europe (Hytner, D. (September 11, 2012). The company owner has pledged to spend a lot in the coming years in order to enable the PSG to become the greatest football club across the globe. In addition, the purchase of PSG by QSI was a good idea because it is a big advantage to the company. This is because investing in the football club can enable them to develop a powerful team; thus contributing to increased performance level.

'Loser Pays' Rules Make A Comeback Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

'Loser Pays' Rules Make A Comeback - Article Example Under the current system, lawsuits have proven to be outrageously expensive for corporations. These lawsuits have generated up to $73 billion being paid by corporations, out of which a staggering amount of $17 billion has made its way into the pockets of plaintiff attorneys. Out of the latter, the plaintiffs fail to claim the amount that rightfully belongs to their corporation. The implemented taxes that should serve to protect shareholders instead cause more harm due to added litigation charges. Lawsuits are initiated because of a third party harming the corporations. These lawsuits add to the damage and do little to control the initial problems. Because there are no added costs involved, shareholders have been relentlessly filing lawsuits against the third parties that harm corporations. In such an event, the authorities have decided to implement a loser-pays rule. According to this rule, the party which loses in the trial has to pay the costs incurred by the winner as well. Since the trial never really subjects the parties to any costs whatsoever, through this rule, the shareholders will have to take precautions before going ahead with the lawsuit. This is because the probability of winning a trial is not definite for all cases. Therefore, shareholders are risking higher costs when initiating a lawsuit. If they lose, they will have to ‘compensate’ for the resulting costs incurred by the winning party. The loser-pays rule is very different from the American Rule applied in the United States. Under the latter, the long-term shareholders bear the costs of added litigation which are not obvious at the time of the trial. This rule is not new to economies as it has been the basis of shareholder lawsuits in the United Kingdom. If this rule is implemented it would alter the business model currently being followed by introducing actual financial risk. However, this rule needs to be implemented at the

Differences between Beatrice and Hero in Much Ado about Nothing Essay

Differences between Beatrice and Hero in the early scenes of Shakespeare’s play ‘Much Ado about Nothing’ Shakespeare’s play ‘Much Ado about Nothing’ has two main female characters, Beatrice and Hero, who are cousins. Both appear to be completely different in the beginning of the play but, as things progress and their characters develop, there are also some very obvious similarities between them. Hero and Beatrice have a very close relationship; they are best friends. Leonato is Hero’s father but Beatrice has no parents, which gives her greater freedom. Where Hero is polite, quiet, respectful and gentle, Beatrice is feisty, cynical, witty, and sharp. Shakespeare uses quite a lot of literary devices and techniques to present the characters of Hero and Beatrice in a way that lets the audience easily compare and contrast them. For example, in the characterisation of Hero and Beatrice, the dialogue used – what they say, how they say it, what other characters say about them and Hero’s silence are all very important in revealing their characters; in a similar way, their actions – what the characters do, and their inaction contrasts and creates significant difference between them, bringing each one’s personality. In addition, Shakespeare’s constant use of dramatic irony, exaggeration and contrasting plots, themes and structure all combine in his presentation of the two. At the start of the play Hero is presented as a typical woman of the time, modest and demure – she says little. In fact, Shakespeare’s first words describing Hero, ‘Is she not a modest young lady’ announce her essential qualities of modesty and decorum. In this period, these were vital qualities to have in a wife and Hero possessed them, unlike Beatrice. By contrast, Shakespeare portrays Beatrice as an untypical woman, being outspoken, independent, witty and unconventional – she is always participating in the conversation even with the men (especially Benedick), which Hero never does. A prime example of this in Act 1 is when Beatrice asks the messenger about Benedick, (a lord, and soldier from Padua) in an offensive way: â€Å"I pray you, is Signor Mountanto returned from the wars or no?† This is part of her â€Å"merry war† with Benedick. Beatrice appears to loathe Benedick and vice versa; they engage in many â€Å"skirmishes of wit.† However, although Beatrice appears hardened and sharp, she is vu... ...he other hand, Beatrice and Benedick are comedy-makers and Beatrice is not ruled by her father as Hero clearly is. It does take Don Pedro’s benevolent plot to bring Benedick and Beatrice together, however. A modern audience would prefer Beatrice to Hero as she is her own self and admirable. The relationships also differ because Benedick and Beatrice’s relationship slowly grew whereas Claudio and Hero’s relationship was love at first sight. Perhaps it was a little hasty as we see in Act 4 how their love turns sour. Beatrice and Hero are both wonderful and intriguing characters. They develop in interesting ways and they represent two extremely different views of society and what it was like to be a woman in those patriarchal times.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   I find Beatrice the more interesting character of the two women; she is more active and has a fuller character which lets you speculate about her whereas this isn’t possible with Hero because her character is so bland. Beatrice’s character is also more entertaining and she stimulates feelings out of the reader, making you like or dislike her and the way she acts and again this isn’t as possible for Hero because her character is so featureless.

Consumerism: Want and New Pair Shoes Essay

In today’s society consumerism has taken a big role in everyone’s lives because people seem to buy materialistic objects that they don’t need, but buy for pleasure. People don’t see that this is becoming an issue in our society because they are to focused on wanting more for their satisfaction than they need. I seen all these advertisements on TV that show Nemours athletes wearing the new so called â€Å"gear,’ making every one want what they see such as shoes, Jordan’s, Nike, and Vans. I myself I like shoes, but not to the extent were I have boxes and boxes piled up in my closet like some people. For example, I have friends who buy $300 dollar shoes or camp the night at foot locker just to get the latest Jordan’s, I find this shocking to believe what people are willing to do just to get a new pair of shoes. Some of my friends have a collection of Jordan’s stacked up against their wall of a value roughly around 3 to 4,000 dollars shocking I know. I sit back and laugh at my friends for wasting so much money on so many pairs of shoes that’s they don’t need and only wear them like once. Advertisements’ takes a big role in shoes by making athletes wear certain footwear that magically makes them better at what they do weather it has to do with running faster or jumping higher, tricking young minds into thinking they can be the same if they go out and buy the product. â€Å"What image does the athlete project about the product† (Levine.302). These types of advertisements focus more on younger minds because they don’t know better and are willing to spend an outrages amount of money. Statistics show that every woman in the United States own at least 17 pairs of shoes or more. More and more people are consuming more than they need either to fit in with today’s society or want the latest shoe brand. Shoes have become a world-wide thing were people don’t know what’s enough or how much it too much. For instants’, Jordan’s are nice and comfortable but to pricey, were you have a pair of And 1 also a pair of basketball shoes were they cost about $50 dollars’. What people are doing is basically buying the brand not  the shoe. Horning states† We are institutionally trapped in the prison- house of design† (Horning.316). Some people feel guilty when they go out the so called â€Å"Mall† and feel the need to buy new shoes all the time. This is where consumerism comes in and plays a big role; society is blinded to see that their wants have gone up drastically and dramatically. â€Å"That’s what we like and that’s what we buy† (Horning.316). Anything people see they buy without thinking twice and knowing that they already have brand new pair shoes they have not worn because there to focused on buying and buying till they see they no longer have space in their closet to put new shoes in. In Conclusion, Today’s society has a big problem when it comes to consumerism because our younger generation doesn’t know when to stop or what’s too much. Many people should take into consideration that buying to many things doesn’t make you fit in or make you any better than the next person who only has 3 pairs of shoes, society should take a little bit of more responsibility and take into count that our wants are not as important as our needs. What Do ACT Scores Measure IQ Income

What Do ACT Scores Measure IQ Income SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips ACT scores are a fixture of the college admissions process, but what do they really measure? Are they a useful way to judge your abilities and potential? In this article, I’ll give you the details on what the ACT can and can’t measure and how to interpret your scores as a high school student. Do ACT Scores Measure General Intelligence? Since there are many different types of intelligence, this is a complicated question.High scores on the ACT might be derived from a high level of innate intelligence and a good education, but they might also be derived from relatively average innate intelligence and extensive prep work.ACT scores change dramatically based on students’ level of preparation, which separates them from scores on your basic IQ test. (Although IQ tests are also highly flawed measures of intelligence - I won’t get into that here!) A student’s ACT scores are subject not only to his or her level of intelligence, but also to his or her desire for improvement and overall academic drive.Since it’s possible to improve ACT scores through prep, they don’t always measure intelligence in the traditional sense. A student who has the motivation to prepare for the ACT and understands the stakes of the test demonstrates a form of intelligence just by providing such a strong display of conscientiousness. This is why it’s hard to make concrete judgments about whether the ACT can measure innate intelligence or not.It measures different qualities for different people depending on how they got to their scores. The ACT also isn’t as similar to traditional IQ tests as the SAT.The SAT was originally derived from an IQ test, and there are vestiges of that format left over on the current model. The ACT, on the other hand, was developed as an alternative to the SAT.Its goal was to test material that was learned in school, not just overall cognitive reasoning ability. For this reason, the ACT is generally a more straightforward test.Still, the ACT is more similar to the SAT than most people think. For example, the science section is really just a bunch of logical reasoning questions cloaked in largely extraneous scientific facts. This business must be science related! No one would use symbols for the elements just to make a bad pun that has nothing to do with what they're selling! The ACT, like the SAT, also runs into problems with social inequalities that cause poor students to score lower on the test regardless of â€Å"intelligence†.This disparity means that there are other major issues with claiming that the ACT can accurately measure a student’s intelligence level. Two students with relatively equal intelligence but different qualities of high school education may both take the ACT and end up with vastly different scores. Poor students are less likely to have access to expensive specialized prep programs and more likely to attend underfunded schools that provide a less comprehensive education. The fact that these students score lower means that the ACT is technically doing its job in measuring college readiness, but it also means that test scores could be preventing some intelligent but socioeconomically disadvantaged students back from reaching their full potentials. The intent of the ACT from the beginning was not to measure intelligence as a general quality but to measure what students learned in school and gauge their college and career readiness (a model that the College Board has tried to emulate on the latest version of the SAT).It's less of a measure of intelligence than it is a measure of college preparedness, and even then it doesn’t give you the entire picture. While innate intelligence certainly plays a role, scores are also affected by many other factors that don’t have much to do with a person’s overall cognitive abilities. Do ACT Scores Measure Career Potential? This is another tough question, because there are so many different career paths that you might take. In some of these fields, the skill sets that allow you to do well on the ACT might not be as relevant. Most people will need basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills in their careers (and in adult life in general), but it’s hard to say whether an exceptional score on the ACT means you’ll do any better in your career than someone who got an average score. One fact that we know for sure is that ACT scores correlate strongly with parental income. This means that students with wealthy parents are more likely to do well on the ACT. These students are also more likely to earn high incomes later in life. This benefit has less to do with their performance on the ACT and more to do with their socioeconomic status. Students with wealthier parents can afford specialized prep courses and don’t have as much trouble paying for expensive colleges. They end up with less debt and better access to the careers that interest them. There’s a long legacy of economic inequality at play here, and standardized tests are a part of that (although there are much bigger societal forces at its root). As I’ve said, however, the skills required to succeed in the job world are often different from the skills required to do well on the ACT.For this reason, your scores aren’t always the most accurate measurement of your career potential. They don’t tell you anything about your ability to manage other people or complete long term projects reliably. ACT scores provide a rough baseline measurement of your knowledge of math, language, and logic (I won’t say science because the science section is really just about logical reasoning). They can’t measure how well you’ll use these basic skills on a larger scale in more complex scenarios, and they can’t measure your interpersonal strengths. Ben, I hate to tell you this, but this entire notebook is just filled with the word "synergy" written over and over again. Are you ok? What Will Your ACT Scores Really Tell You? Should You Listen? It may or may not be useful for you to measure your abilities based on your ACT scores. In certain contexts and for certain students, they can be a helpful guide. In other scenarios, making judgments based on these scores is not productive. ACT Scores Are a More Useful Measurement If: You Plan to Apply to Colleges That Require Standardized Test Scores ACT scores are important if you’re applying to colleges that require you to submit test results. In this case, they can act as an accurate measurement of your likelihood of acceptance based on admissions statistics.By googling the name of a college in conjunction with the phrase â€Å"PrepScholar admissions statistics†, you can get an idea of where you stand and what your target score should be. Make a study plan that aligns with your goals for improvement so that you’ll have a better chance at being admitted to a college you love. You Have a GPA That’s on the Lower Side ACT scores are a more useful measurement for students with low GPAs because they can serve as a wake up call if they’re especially high or low. If you have a low GPA but a high ACT score, this is a red flag telling you that you're probably capable of doing better in school. It most likely means that if you put in more effort, you would be able to earn higher grades. It also tells you that you have the potential to succeed in college if you adopt better study habits.Your high ACT score is also going to be particularly valuable to you in the college admissions process, so it’s more important to pay attention to your scores and take them seriously. If you have a low ACT score and a low GPA, this is also useful because it indicates that you’re missing out on key concepts in your classes. This could be a problem when you get to college. It also means you might encounter issues in the admissions process depending on where you apply and how low your scores and GPA are in comparison to each college's expectations. A low ACT score combined with a low GPA might prompt you to take more drastic measures to remedy your problems in school. The ACT can give you that extra push to address underlying issues that could cause you problems in college and beyond. Your Score Is Especially High or Low For scores that are in the middle range (16-24 represents the middle 50 percent of test takers) the ACT is a more ambiguous measurement of academic ability. However, if your scores are very high or very low, the ACT may be a more useful measurement for you.A very high score means that you likely have strong reasoning abilities and are well-prepared to take on college academics. It also means that you’ll have a lot of choices in the college application process. A very low score means that you probably have some big gaps in your content knowledge and struggle with time pressure. It also means that you'll have fewer choices for college, so you should take your score into account when planning where to apply. Extreme scores are major indications of how well-prepared you are to take on academic challenges in college.Standardized tests like the ACT can tell you things about your overall knowledge and reasoning abilities that your grades in high school might spell out less clearly. If your scores are XTREME, you should consider them more strongly. ACT Scores Are a Less Useful Measurement If: You Plan to Apply to Test Optional Colleges or Go Into a Professional Job Training Program After High School If you don’t plan on applying to colleges that require you to submit ACT or SAT scores, you won’t need to consider the ACT as seriously as a measurement of your abilities.High scores can help you even at a test optional college, but they’re not a critical component of admissions decisions. You might still pay some attention to your scores to ensure that they’re not low enough to indicate any major gaps in your knowledge, but overall they're not as important for you. You Have a High GPA ACT scores aren't as critical of a measurementif your GPA is already very high. When I say "very high", I mean a GPA that indicates that you earned mostly As in high level classes throughout high school. Usually this would be between a 3.7 and a 5.0 depending on whether your school uses a weighted or unweighted GPA scale. As long as your ACT scores aren't extremely low (below the 25th percentile score of 16), they won’t kill your chances of getting into college. Judging yourself based on your scores when you already have a high GPA can be a bad idea because it might make you think less of your academic abilities. Many people struggle with time on the ACT, resulting in lower scores than their performance in high school would predict. It’s still a good idea to try and improve your scores if you’re looking to get into selective colleges, but in these cases you have to remind yourself not to take your scores too seriously as a measurement of your potential. Overall, You Shouldn’t Make Sweeping Judgements About Your Abilities Based on Your ACT Score Your ACT score isa limited measurement of specific academic skills, and it doesn’t give you a complete picture of your potential.Scores are a useful benchmark in assessing basic subject knowledge and deciding where to apply to college, but don’t make any assumptions about what you’re capable of accomplishing in life based on your scores alone. If you're worried about your scores, you can always improve with dedicated studying! Female Genital Mutilation Comparing Two Primary Source Articles Essay

Female Genital Mutilation Comparing Two Primary Source Articles - Essay Example The two articles; "Wanjiku: Life of A Traditional Woman" by Jean Davison and "National Bodies, Unspeakable Acts: The Sexual Politics of Colonial Policy Making" by Susan Pedersen have given great insight into the myriad aspects of the custom and the controversy surrounding it. Indeed, both the articles have made it clear that female circumcision had not only cultural significance but the political connotations of the issue had superseded its relevance or non relevance in Kenya, especially in the early and mid twentieth century. It was the time when female circumcision was an intrinsic part of socio-cultural dynamics of Kenya which had become synonymous with the identity of Kikuyu. As can be adjudged by Wanjiku's narration, the inhabitants were deeply rooted in the way of life the "Gikuyu" (i.e the cultural community) proposed. A very strong joint family structure was prevalent and their entire life was concentrated within their circles. Having said so, the custom of Irua which could be a barbaric vestige to our perception was as natural for them as a harvesting season festival or a wedding. The Irua was a custom of central significance to the Kikuyu life. The public ceremony marked a new phase in the life of women, it bonded those who were "initiated" very strongy and established a hierarchical structure in the community. Sir Grigg observed in one his letters to Sidney Webb at the Colonial Office," This faction, through its ill-advised attitude, done more than anything else to delay the emancipation of Kikuyu womanhood".1 Though there was some element of truth to this statement, I believe it is important to target the heart of the matter itself. What led to Irua or Clitoridectomy to occupy such an important position in the life of Kikuyu members in the first place What is the heart of the matter The real trigger As described in Pedersen's text, Historians have sidelined in detail how the estrangement and settlement of white population pockets," the establishment of adjoining "native reserves," the construction of a system of "tribal" authority often at odds with earlier political structures, and the deliberate use of taxation and legislation to restrict Africans' freedom to grow cash crops and to coerce them into wage labor left many Kikuyu with little of their "traditional" life, except perhaps the still-powerful rituals of clitoridectomy and male circumcision." 2 Not surprisingly, Irua became synonymous with Kikuyu pride and thus gained momentum as a tradition that signified national pride. The many sides of the coin The nationalist sentiments on the basis of this custom were fanned as the custom was not allowed to remain confined to the community. It soon catapulted into the pivot around which colonial and nationalist arguments and revolutions were based. While on one

Virgin Atlantic Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Virgin Atlantic - Case Study Example They use a mixed Boeing and Airbus fleet, operating between Australia, Asia, the Caribbean, Middle East, Africa, North America, and the UK from bases at Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Virgin Atlantic also operates domestic flights in the UK from March 2013. Virgin Atlantic had 5.3 million passengers in 2011, which makes it the 8th largest airline in the UK. Political influences Tax policies have influenced the airline heavily over the years. Because of its globalization strategy, the different tax policies used by different countries have had an effect on costs. Increased environmental demands by environmentalists have forced Virgin Atlantic to reduce cargo weight and aircraft weight to reduce pollution. This has made Virgin Atlantic research into bio-fuels. Employment laws have also been tightened following cabin crew strikes. In addition, terrorist threats have made Virgin Atlantic take out insurance policies for their crew. Economic factors There is an increasing trend where major ity of countries are seeing decreasing GDP because high unemployment levels and high living standards. This has seen decreasing numbers of clients for Virgin Atlantic. The recent recession has also affected consumer frequency and forced Virgin Atlantic to reduce flights. High exchange rates have also affected Virgin Atlantic due to increased oil prices, resulting in increased airfare. Finally, the increase of interest rates because of slow economic growth, which has seen Virgin Airlines increase airfare because of increased payments on overdrafts and loans. Social factors Various countries practice different religions, and this has made Virgin Atlantic take their staff for training to handle different clients with differing religious beliefs. With different age groups of consumers, Virgin Airlines has installed entertainment for children going on holiday, for instance. Virgin Atlantic, because of its globalization strategy, has also had to train its staff in different languages beca use of the global nature of its clients. Finally, Virgin Atlantic has undertaken various social responsibilities like slum upgrading in Kenya and home sanctuaries for white rhinos and other endangered species. Technological factors These factors influence the lowering of entry barriers for new services and reduction of minimum efficient production. Some include R&D, for example, because of the increased air pollution, Virgin Atlantic undertaken research on the bio-fuel use. In addition, they have also introduced office equipment with internet facilities to cater for business travelers. At Corporate Level there are alternative strategic options for growth that an organisation can take in terms of choices about products or markets. The Ansoff Matrix can be used to identify various strategies that could be adopted by an organisation to pursue growth. Using the Ansoff Matrix, and making reference to examples, evaluate the various strategies that Virgin Atlantic could consider in order to pursue growth to develop their competitive position. Of the four market/product strategies that Ansoff identified, the strategies that Virgin Atlantic is implementing are market expansion or penetration and development of products. These specific strategies come with low risk levels and medium levels of risk for Virgin Atlantic as; indeed, it does for all other companies. The evidence for the strategy of market
